You'll need 4 things to install Antaeus on Mac OS:
- Legitimate copy of Windows Vista or XP
- Parallels Desktop 4.0 CD or Disk Image Installer from Parallels
- 14 day trial or purchased license key for Desktop 4.0
- Antaeus Setup Installer
Part I—Download, Install, and License Desktop 4.0 from Parallels
These instructions assume the use of Safari as the browser.
- Go to http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/.
- Click “Download Trial!”
Safari will download a disk image installer of Desktop 4.0. Progress will be displayed in the Safari “Downloads” window. The disk image name will begin with “ParallelsDesktop-” and end with “.dmg”. The information between pertains to the specific build. Once downloaded, Safari will automatically mount the disk image, which will open a window titled “Parallels Desktop 4”. - In the “Parallels Desktop 4” window, double click the “Install” icon.
- Click “Open” in the ensuing warning window.
- Click “Continue”in the ensuing notification window.
- Follow the installation prompts until Desktop 4.0 is installed.
Once you “Continue” past the final prompt, the installation will take about two minutes. When the installation is complete, the “Applications” folder will open in Finder, with “Parallels Desktop” highlighted. - When the installation is complete, click “Close” to close the installer.
- Launch “Parallels Desktop” by double-clicking it in the “Applications” folder opened by the installer.
A notification window opens telling you, “Your copy of Parallels Desktop is not activated.” The remaining instructions assume you are going to use the 14 day trial license. If you decide later to purchase a license, this can be done at their web site: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/ - Click the blue “obtain a free trial activation key” link in the “Parallels Desktop” window.
- Enter your “User name” and “Email address” in the appropriate fields and click “Register”.
Chances are your “User name” is already filled in because it will use your logon name by default. After a short wait, you'll be notified that a “trial activation key was to your e-mail address.” The trial key is emailed instantly. Be sure to double-check your email so the activation key won't be sent to the wrong place. - Click “OK” to close the notice.
The window shrinks back to the original “Parallels Desktop” notification window. - Click “Activate Product” to proceed to the activation dialog.
- Check your email, copy the trial Activation Key, and return to the “Parallels Desktop” dialog.
- Paste the copied key in the “Activation Key” field and click “OK”.
Once the trial Activation Key has been accepted, Parallels Desktop will realize there are no VMs present and automatically start the New Virtual Machine Assistant, which brings us to part II of this process.
Part II—Install the Windows Vista or XP Virtual Machine
- Insert your Windows Vista or XP disc and wait about 30 seconds.
- Click “Continue” in the “New Virtual Machine Assistant” window (henceforth “VM Assistant”).
The VM Assistant will automatically detect the presence of the XP or Vista disc and prompt you for the Windows Product Key. You must have the Windows Product Key to continue following these steps. - Enter the Windows Product key and click “Continue”.
Be sure to double-check the Product Key when you enter it because Parallels Desktop can only fully automate the installation process if it is entered correctly at this point. - 4.Click “Create” in the following VM Assistant prompt.
This creates the virtual machine onto which Windows will be installed. Desktop does not create a separate partition on your disk, but installs and maintains Windows on an expandable disk image—which is actually a kind of file. - Click “Start” in the following VM Assistant prompt.
Parallels Desktop automatically installs Windows on the VM. This process is displayed in a window, which will change sizes as different stages of the installation are completed. When finished, Windows is launched into “Coherence Mode”, and this window is replaced by a Windows Start Menu icon in the Mac OS Dock. A link to the virtual machine is created on the desktop, titled “Windows Vista” or “Windows XP”, depending on the OS installed. This can be used to start the Windows VM.
If you install Vista, the Vista Sidebar will integrate with the Mac OS desktop, which will probably be an annoyance. You can disable it by going using the “View” menu in Parallels Desktop to go to “Window” mode, where you can right click on the Sidebar icon in the Windows Icon Tray and select “Exit”.
Part III—Download and Install Antaeus on the Windows Virtual Machine
- Use Safari to download the Antaeus installer, “Antaeus x.x Setup.exe” (where x.x represents the release number), from http://antaeus-data.com/download.html.
- Select “Antaeus x.x Setup.exe” from the “Downloads” list in the Dock.
- Click “Open” in the ensuing notification window.
- Click “Run” in the window after that.
- Follow the setup dialogs through to the “Completed” dialog and click “Finish”.
Antaeus will launch and run on the Mac as if it were a Mac app. If you want to be able to launch Antaeus from Mac OS, click on the Antaeus “A” icon in the Doc and hold the mouse down until the context menu appears, then select “Keep in Dock”. Henceforth, selecting the Antaeus “A” icon from the Dock will launch Antaeus, whether or not the Windows VM is already loaded.
