Antaeus Release Notes
Release 3.2
This release introduces:
- Quantile Scatter Plot SV for comparing the X and Y measures of a scatter plot with their quantile distributions.
- Subset Array of up to 16 scatter plots for comparing scatter plot distributions across a series of subsets.
- Subsets can now be created from selected sunflowers in the Single Sunflower Plot SV.
- All SVs are now organized in relation to the Base, Fixed, and Running measures.
- Scatter plots can now be added to the Free mode Scatter Plot Array by selecting them from the Based mode Scatter Plot Array.
- Local mode for looking at measures between the Single Quantile Plot, Q Separation Array, and Q Measure Array SVs without changing the Base measure used elsewhere.
- Local mode for looking at measures between the Z-Space Exploration and Z-Space Slice Array SVs without affecting the Base, Fixed, and Running measures used elsewhere.
Build 3.2.69 (March 16, 2010)
Runtime error 9 (Subscript out of range) incurred in the Z-Space Exploration SV when selecting a slice from window 118 after selecting a measure from window 177 that caused window 118 to be updated with more slices than were previously listed.
This has been corrected.
In the Separation Array SV, the red plot selection highlight is sometimes drawn in random locations in the Separation Array displayed in window 162.
The red highlight is now only shown at the time a plot is selected. Since there is no need to remember the selected plot in this SV between sessions, any change that refreshes the Separation Array in window 162 will cause the red highlight to go away.
Demo cubes have been updated so that the plots in array SVs are arranged more attractively.
Build 3.2.68 (March 15, 2010)
Fixes and changes
Fixes and changes in the 3.2 release include:
- Several problems have been fixed with the slides machinery.
- Data symbols now shrink in size in the Scatter Plot Array, Dimension Array, Separation Array, and Z-Space Slice Array SVs in order to better accommodate the smaller cell sizes of larger arrays. This is also true for the new Subset Array SV.
- The way in which the Fixed and Running plots are selected by selecting plots from the Scatter Plot Array and Scatter Plot Matrix SVs has changed. The Fixed Plot and Running Plot radio buttons are now used to decide whether clicking on plot chooses the Fixed or Running plot.
- The Base, Fixed, and Running measures are now associated with the X, Y, and Z measures in the Z-Space SVs when the Z-Space SVs are in Based mode.
- Plot information headers are now optionally inside or outside of the plots themselves. This allows for creating metafiles from plots either with or without the information headers.
Release 3.1
This release introduces:
- Dimension Array of up to 9 separated scatter plots.
- Separation Array of up to 36 solo scatter plots.
- Z-Space Slice Array of up to 36 scatter plot intervals.
- Multi-Quantile Array of up to 36 quantile plots for as many measures.
- Redesigned Slides functionality that now allows slides to be created from the Scatter Plot Array, Scatter Plot Matrix, Dimension Array, Separation Array, Z-Space Exploration, Z-Space Slice Array, Sunflower Plot Matrix, Single Quantile Plot, Quantile Plot Array, and Multi-Quantile Array SVs.
- Z-Score and Log transforms in the Functions SV.
Build 3.1.115 (February 9, 2010)
Fixes
Runtime error 341 (Invalid control array index) sometimes incurred in the Separation SV when selecting a color from the color palette in window 76 after using the Clear button in window 32 to clear the current dimension of separation.
This bug has been isolated and corrected.
Runtime error 9 (Subscript out of range) sometimes incurred in the Quantile Plot Array SV when plotting the values of a dimension created from the Partitioning SV.
This has been corrected.
Runtime error 9 (Subscript out of range) sometimes incurred in the Functions SV when removing a function-measure.
This is an oversight that has been corrected.
A hard crash with runtime error 9 (Subscript out of range) infrequently incurred upon accessing the Separation SV just after creating a partitioned dimension in the Partitioning SV.
The anomaly behind this problem has been found and the problem has been corrected.
The wrong data points are assigned to a part in the Partitioning SV when a subset is used to define the part. This happens only when a subset other than the Universal Set (S-1) is being used as the active subset.
This rather major bug has been resolved.
Build 3.1.111 (January 25, 2010)
Fixes
Runtime error 380 (Invalid property value) incurred when attempting to Update a brush in the Brushing SV that defines records not contained in the active subset.
This has been corrected.
When Separation is first applied using the Separation SV, Show Others is set to "No" by default in the Scatter Plot Display properties. This can cause some confusion when there are unseparated values.
Show Others is now set to "Yes" by default in the Scatter Plot Display properties.
When a subset is used as a brush, the wrong or non-existent data points are sometimes brushed in the Z-Space Exploration and Slice Array SVs.
This was caused by both logic and rounding errors, depending on the situation. The logic errors have been corrected, and the rounding errors have been studied and compensated for. These fixes have been extensively tested, and we are confident that brushed points can now be trusted in the Z-Space SVs. Bare in mind, however, that rounding errors are a product of mathematics and not errors in programming. We have compensated for them only as far as necessary in order to prevent confusion. If a brushed point looks out of place, we recommend that you look into it. There is every likeliness that this will lead to some new insight in relation to the data being studied.
The range of the Z-measure displayed for each plot in the Z-Space Slice Array SV is not updated when switching between Same Range and Same Count Slice Modes.
This has been corrected. The range of the Z-measure for each plot is now always updated.
The width of the histogram bars are not automatically updated when their sizes are changed in the Multi-Quantile Array SV.
This oversight has been corrected.
Function-measures created in the Functions SV sometimes disappear from the cube when a slide is selected that was added before the function-measure was created.
This has been corrected.
Runtime error 9 (Subscript out of range) incurred upon accessing the Dimension Array SV after removing a partitioned dimension using the Partitioning SV.
This has been fixed.
Build 3.1.104 (January 15, 2010)
Fixes and Changes
There are several fixes and changes in release 3.1:
- The Select Cube SV has been simplified to clean up the feel of the SV.
- Some windows can now be hidden in certain SVs.
- The Z-Space Exploration SV has been completely reinvented and is used with the new Z-Space Slice SV.
- The Scatter Plot Tracks SV has been removed.
- The Functions SV has been redesigned to improve the interface.
Known problems
When the X or Y measure is magnified in the Z-Space SVs, brushed points are not plotted relative to the scale.
We're aware of the problem, and we are working on a solution. For now the way to work around this is to create a subset that matches as closely as possible the magnified measures of interest by creating two atomic subsets (one per measure) and then a Boolean subset that ORs the two together. If you make this the active subset and specify Subset Scale Mode in the Scatter Plot Display properties, then this will create the same effect as a magnified pair of measures, and brushed points will be properly displayed.
Release 2.3
This release introduces:
- Defining of new measures as functions of one or more existing measures (see FunctionsDefining new measures).
- Defining of new dimensions from one or more subsets or scatter plots (see PartitionsDefining new dimensions).
- Scatter plot array of up to 36 scatter plots.
- Scatter plot track (viewed in a straight line by scrolling) of up to 36 plots.
- Single pixel data point option for scatter plots (see Navigating Large Cubes).
- Z-Space view of three measures, from which subsets may be created of data slices or regions.
- Sampling options for large data sets (see Navigating Large Cubes).
- Use of Escape key to stop the drawing of plots (see Navigating Large Cubes).
- Window navigator for bringing any child window to the top.
Build 2.3.60 (September 23, 2009)
Fix
File locators did not show mapped network drives in the Drives list.
This has been corrected. Mapped network drives are now listed in the Drives list.
Build 2.3.59 (September 21, 2009)
Fix
Window 48 in the Subsets SV does not list those records that are in the currently selected subset. Records are always listed starting from record #1.
This has been corrected. Now only those records that exist in the currently selected subset are displayed in window 48.
Build 2.3.58 (September 17, 2009)
Fixes
Crashes and errors occur when accessing network locations from the Create Cube and Select Cube SVs.
Some of the problems associated with these errors have been corrected. However, some users may still get errors when accessing network locations. Please send error reports if you encounter them.
When a slide is saved in either the Single Sunflower Plot or the Double Sunflower Plot SV, the separated values of that slide's dimensions get mixed up when the slide is loaded again.
Rather than fixing this outright, we've decided to just not reload the separated values that were saved with the slide. This may cause confusion in some cases. If you want the separated values of the current dimension to be saved with the slide, then save your slide in either the Single Scatter Plot or the Double Scatter Plot SV. We plan to rewrite Slides for 2.4 using a more robust paradigm, so this will be fixed entirely in 2.4.
Known problems
Various errors are thrown when attempting to access a cube or text file in the Select Cube or the Create Cube SV, respectively, when the user has no read access to the file. In some cases, selecting a read-only cube may throw an error (Some file specific ACL restrictions)though in most cases Antaeus will support access to read-only cubes (Optical media, all folder specific read-only ACL restrictions, and most file specific read-only ACL restrictions).
If access to a read-only cube throws an error, use Windows to copy the cube to a writeable location and then access it from there. If attempting to access a file or cube to which you have no read access throws an error, get access from your systems administrator. We plan to replace these thrown errors with more informative notices.
Build 2.3.57 (September 3, 2009)
Fix
Brushes were not being drawn in cubes that contain no dimensions.
This oversight has been corrected.
Change
Extra error handling has been added to help us track down the lock-out problem noted under build 2.3.56.
Build 2.3.56 (September 1, 2009)
Fixes and Changes
There are several fixes and changes in release 2.3:
- Navigation and layout have been reorganized so that any SV is immediately accessible.
- Density plots have been removed because the sunflower plots are more informative.
- Metafile machinery has been cleaned up and simplified, fixing many bugs in he process.
- Slides machinery (accessed from the Slides button) has been cleaned up and simplified, fixing some bugs in the process.
- Several bugs have been fixed in the Subsets and Brushing machinery.
- File handling has been cleaned up, fixing a few bugs and inconsistencies in the process.
- Links to our website and our user forum have been added to the MDI form.
Known problems
Scatter plots and scatter plot arrays that collectively contain over 3 or 4 million points may fail to save to a metafile. This is not an Antaeus bug, but a limitation of the Windows operating system. We're looking into the possibility of providing support for saving scatter plots to high quality JPG format as a way around this limitation.
Clicking on the Subsets button in the main window or in window 109 of the Partitions SV periodically cause Antaeus to enter a locked unresponsive state.
Switching to another application and coming back to Antaeus for some reason frees Antaeus from this locked state.
Release 2.2
This release introduces:
- Sunflower and density single, double, and matrix plots.
- Quantile and histogram single and array plots.
- Synchronized multivariate and univariate subsystems.
- Sidebar navigation within subsystems.
- Magnification of measures by range reduction using a scatter, sunflower, or quantile plot.

- Scale reversal for all multivariate plots.
Build 2.2.66 (June 23, 2009)
Fixes
Run-time error 9 (Subscript out of range) sometimes incurred in the Density Plot Subsystem.
The conditions that caused this have been isolated, allowing us to fix the problem.
The record count shown for the values of the dimension selected in window 69 of the Plot Array SV in the Univariate subsystem innaccurate.
Record counts are now accurately displayed.
Build 2.2.64 (June 15, 2009)
Fix
Infinite error loop sometimes encountered if an error occurs within the currently selected cube file.
The currently selected cube is now deselected if an error occurs. This prevents the infinite error loop from occurring.
Changes
A hot-link to this website has been placed at the top of the main window.
Build 2.2.63
Fix
Run-time error 9 (Subscript out of range) sometimes incurred in the Single and Double Plot SVs of the Density Plots subsystem if the plot window is clicked in when no brush points are displayed.
Problem found and corrected.
Build 2.2.62
Fix
Run-time error 9 (Subscript out of range) sometimes incurred in the Matrix Plot SV of the Density Plots subsystem if a jittered and magnified measure is plotted when brushed points are set to be displayed.
Problem found and corrected.
Build 2.2.61
Fix
Run-time error 9 (Subscript out of range) incurred in the Matrix Plot SV of the Density Plots subsystem if a jittered measure is plotted when brushed points are set to be displayed.
Problem found and corrected.
Build 2.2.60
Fix
Density or sunflower degree legends pertained only to the left plot in the Double Plot SV of the Density Plots subsystem.
Legends are now individual to each of the two plots.
Build 2.2.59
Changes
There have been several changes from release 2.1:
-
Navigation and layout have been reorganized and extended to make use
of the multivariate and univariate subsystems, and to streamline access
to the subset library, slides, and SV controls.
- Cube creation has been simplified to include fewer steps.
- Visual controls for plot SVs have been centralized in SV specific SV
managers.
- Six brush point styles have been added.
- The subset library, in which a subset may be selected as the active
subset or the brush, is now accessible from any SV within the
multivariate and univariate subsystems by using the Subset
button located in the MDI form.
- Subsets can be defined visually using the Brushing SV under Scatter
Plots or Density Plots in the multivariate subsystems, or by using Single
Plots in the univariate subsystem.
- In section 1 of the End User License Agreement, "Commercial Entity" has been redefined to include government entities.
Release 2.1
This first release of Antaeus supports the importing of data from comma, tab, and semi-colon delimited files. Basic functionality includes three scatter plot based SynchroViews (SV) for viewing dataSingle Plot, Double Plot, and Matrix Plotsubsetting, color and gray scale separation, and brushing.
Build 2.1.38
Fixes
Run-time error incurred in the Single Plot or Double Plot SV if window 0035 (Selected Record) is showing when the plot is updated the plot is updated by any modal window.
Problem found and corrected.
Child windows are sometimes drawn off screen and cannot be accessed when the screen resolution is smaller than our recommended minimum of 1280x1024.
Scrollbars have been enabled in the main MDI form (the work space) to allow such windows to be accessed and moved into the main viewable area.
Changes
Sections 2.1 and 2.3 of the End User License Agreement (EULA) have been updated to be clearer and to reflect that the evaluation period has been extended to a period of ninety (90) days for commercial users.
Known problem
A clipboard copy (using the "Clipboard" button) of plots that contain a very large number of data points will sometimes fail to paste in MS Word 97, and possibly other presentation applications.
The "Metafile" button can still be used to successfully create a metafile of the same plot. This can then be imported or inserted into your MS Word or other presentation document.
Build 2.1.37
Fix
Run-time error incurred in the Subsets SV by selecting a record from window 0048 (Subset Record Data).
Problem found and corrected.
Build 2.1.36
Fixes
Run-time error sometimes incurred in the Create Cube SV by selecting an unsupported file format from window 0001 (Select Text File).
Non supported file formats are now
filtered out so they cannot be seen, and therefore not selected.
Run-time error sometimes incurred in the Subsets SV by selecting a subset after deleting a subset in window 0020 (Manage Subsets).
Problem found and corrected.
Build 2.1.35
Known problems
Run-time error sometimes incurred in the Create Cube SV by selecting an unsupported file format from window 0001 (Select Text File).
